Who is the Giant..? Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5...?

Samsung Galaxy S IV, or Galaxy S4 as Samsung has been calling it so far, was officially unveiled Thursday at an event accompanied by a live orchestra while an audience of thousands watched the theatrics unfold on a four-level stage.

The Galaxy S4, which crams a 5-inch screen into body slightly smaller than the S III's, will go sale starting April. Samsung didn't say what the phone will cost, but it can be expected to start at $200 with a two-year contract in the U.S. That's comparable to the iPhone 5.

JK Shin, the executive in charge of Samsung's mobile communications division, promised the money would be well spent for a "life companion" that will "improve the way most people live every day."

That bold promise set the tone for the kind of flashy presentation associated with the showmanship of Apple, the company that Samsung has been trying to upstage. Apple contends Samsung has been trying to do it by stealing its ideas - an allegation has triggered bitter courtroom battles around the world.

One way Samsung and other makers of Android phone have been one-upping Apple is by increasing the screen size. Every successive generation of the Galaxy line has been bigger than the one before. The S III sported a screen that measures 4.8 inches on the diagonal, already substantially larger than the iPhone 5's 4-inch screen. The S4's screen is 56 percent larger than the iPhone's.

Apart from the larger screen and upgraded processor, the S4 has a battery that's 20 percent larger than that of the S III. Samsung didn't say if that translates into a longer battery life - the added capacity might be gobbled up by the bigger screen or other internal changes.

The S4 comes with a built-in infra-red diode, so it can control an entertainment center as a universal remote. This is a feature that has showed up in Android tablets before.

The S4 comes with several new technologies intended to help users interact with the phone. For instance, the screen now senses fingers hovering just above the screen, and some applications react. The Mail application shows the first few lines of an email when a finger hovers above it in the list, and the Gallery application shows an expanded thumbnail.

Users can control some other applications by making gestures in the air above the phone. In the browser, you can command the screen to scroll up by swiping from top to bottom a few inches from the phone.

The Camera application can now use both the front and rear cameras simultaneously, inserting a small picture of the user even as he's capturing the scene in front of him.

When several S4s are in close proximity, they can link up to play the same music, simultaneously - perfect for headphone dance parties.

The Galaxy S4 also will include a tool that enables users to create a dividing line so part of the phone is devoted exclusively to work while the other part is filled with personal information and photos. The feature is similar to a function on the latest BlackBerry - an indication that Samsung is going after other smartphone makers besides Apple with its latest model.

Apple serves up 25 billion iOS apps to users

Apple has crossed the 25 billion milestone. A few days ago the company posted a countdown to the 25 billionth download along with a competition for the worth $10,000 to spend on iTunes. The company has not yet announced who downloaded the 25 billionth app, or the app that was downloaded to bring up the remarkable figure.

Apple has crossed the 25 billion app milestone a mere three years after it crested the 1 billion apps downloaded. It also comes slightly less than fours after Apple first started selling apps through the iTunes store, marking an incredible acceleration in downloads. The app downloads have been generated through sales to the estimated combined 300 million iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners.

Update: Apple has announced that the 25 billionth download was made by Chunli Fu, of Qingdao, China. The app in question was Where's My Water? Free. The title has regularly scored high in App Store charts.

Opera Mini 7 For Android released

Opera just released the latest version of its server-accelerated Mini web browser for Android. Opera Mini 7 brings several new features, including improved hardware acceleration, which should drastically improve its smoothness.

The Speed Dial screen has also been updated and you are now allowed to select the number of buttons you see there. Previously, Speed Dial was set to show 9 of your bookmarks and there was no way to alter that.

Naturally, the data compression, allowing you to save up to 90% of your data traffic is still Opera Mini 7′s key feature. The new release also comes with the mandatory host of bug-fixes, performance tweaks and compatibility improvements and can be downloaded from the Play Store right away.

Alternatively, you can also visit m.opera.com from your Android browser to download the update. The option for installing non-market apps should be enabled on your phone for that to work, though.

Angry Birds Space Review

It’s finally here: the avian outer space destruction simulation that’s been on the minds of Bird-brains for weeks. Angry Birds Space represents the first major revision to Rovio’s familiar formula since the game launched – unlike the various Seasons themed updates (with the occasional extra bird thrown in) Angry Birds Space shakes up the equation with physics-based levels and puzzles, forcing players to account for areas of low, zero and radial gravity in order to smash those thieving pigs. Does Space live up to its world-conquering predecessor? Read on to find out.

When you start Angry Birds Space, you’re presented with the familiar formula of slingsh0t-based carnage with only one twist: the playing surface is now an asteroid that curves aroung 360 degrees. No problem, right? Just aim for the prize and don’t overshoot, like always. Until the first time that you do overshoot, or zip right through the pigs’ hastily-built constructions, and keep going in a deteriorating orbit that slowly spirals down to the planetoid. This is a bird of a different color.

Through the various levels you’ll encounter pigs and obstacles free-floating in space, where a direct point-to-point trajectory can hit home on the first go. But there’s also free-floating debris, some of which generates its own gravity field (the white bubbles you see around the asteroids in the screenshots). You can use these bodies to curve your otherwise straight flight path, shoot down to the asteroid for some standard destruction, or bump the pigs’ flotillas into the nearest gravity field to give them an up-close and personal introduction to the ground. There’s a staggering array of ways to accomplish your goals, and the familiar methods aren’t always the best.

Then there’s the birds themselves. The red, blue and black birds behave pretty much as they always have, with the addition of straight flight in zero gravity. (Also they get some Buck Rogers in the 25th Century-themed costumes.) The yellow bird is now the “Lazer Bird” in a fetching shade of purple, and alters his path once during flight while speeding up. The Ice Bird smashes into any structure and turns a good portion of it to ice ( the Angry Birds Space equivalent of glass) and the the inexplicably named Terence (green bird) has a huge amount of mass for getting through multiple formations or big piles.

While the Space gameplay will be familair to anyone who’s played the original, there’s enough new material and flexible gameplay to keep even the most saturated of fans coming back for more. The gravity and physics makes new options possible, while creating an environment for puzzles and triggers that makes you want to play some levels over and over. This really is a significant addition to the simple game, enough that those who’ve skipped the last year’s worth of expansions will want to check out the differences.

It isn’t perfect. While playing on my Galaxy Tab 8.9 with its 720p resolution, the cinematic and field itself is shrunken somewhat; on Android at least, the UI needs a little tweaking to be ideal. Owners of 720p phones and tablets of any size should download Angry Birds Space HD. On more than one occasion I actually pushed pigs outside of the playing area without smashing them – presumably they were just hanging in space, awaiting bird-based death that never came. And for all the new gameplay tweaks and great sound design, the graphics still leave a lot to be desired – just about any Android device can handle the game, but it’s not pushing any boundaries in the technical department.

If you’ve got a Samsung Galaxy Note (which I don’t), you get access to 30 exclusive levels of the game that are off-limits to other Android devices. There may be even more than that – while playing through one of the Golden Egg levels I spotted an emblem with the Galaxy Note and its S-Pen, presumably a hidden treat for owners of the premium hardware.

The bottom line is this: if you love Angry Birds, you’ll continue to love Angry Birds Space. If you haven’t been impressed thus far, give it a shot – the regular Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Space HD are both free downloads in the Google Play Store. If you’re a regular player and don’t want to see the ads, spend a dollar onAngry Birds Space Premium.
